Our microwave has peeling paint on the inside & it sometimes catches popcorn on fire: Is is safe to use?

Our microwave is about 5-6 years old. Over the last few months the inside roof of it has been rusting %26amp; peeling. We cover food before using it, so that the flakes don't drop into our food. Also, when we cook popcorn it tends to catch fire! Can the fumes from the peeling/rusting make us sick? Is it safe to use anymore? Help! Our microwave has peeling paint on the inside %26amp; it sometimes catches popcorn on fire: Is is safe to use?
No. Just buy another one. They are pretty cheap now a days.

The main reason for paint on the inside of the microwave besides appearance is to cover the bare metal so it doesn't 'arc' when the microwave is running. Also, the moisture created during microwaving will rust it up pretty fast. If the paint is peeling after 5 years then it probably wasn't a high quality microwave to begin with. Assuming it is a countertop model, do yourself a favor and buy a new one. Spend at least $150 to get something good. Some have stainless steel interiors which is even better.

As for the popcord catching fire, that usually only happens if left in way past the point of being done. The bag gets so hot from the oil it catches fire from being in the microwave way too long.
no, the paint is insilation. Eventually the microwave with catch on fire, popcorn will be the least of your problems.
if it has anything peeling its not safe, get rid of it and buy you another, they cant be that much
No, buy a new one ASAP. They are pretty cheap these days.
