How do I refinish a peeling painted deck?

My older deck needs refinished. It is still sturdy and not rotted or warped but has two coats of paint that are peeling off. What is a relatively simple way for a novice do-it-yourselfer to refinish it?How do I refinish a peeling painted deck?

rent a floor sander. looks like buffer but uses sandpaper instead. it is quick an easy.
The easiest way would be to borrow or hire a belt sander with a course paper and then go to a fine paper for a smooth finish. I have recently done exactly this and then finished with a product called Tuff Coat Tung oil which is designed for harsh outdoor decking. It is very easy to apply and gives an outstanding finish that will outlast any other timber coating.
