How do I manually remove old peeling car-wax buildup from exterior body paint?

The most effective and economical rubbing compound I've found is the 3M Imperial Machine Glaze, which can be used by hand as well as with a buffer. You can find this at a good auto parts store, usually by the quart. Whatever product you use, it may take several applications to remove all of the old wax and grime.

Also, if you have any black plastic trim or moulding on your car, wipe on a product like Black Magic silicone gel a day or two before you start polishing with compound. This coating will soak into the plastic and help protect your car's trim from discoloration, and will save time trying to keep the compound off those areas. How do I manually remove old peeling car-wax buildup from exterior body paint?
