What is the best way to take down peeling old wallpaper so you can paint the area over?

Ooh I was just watching one of those home shows that had a suggestion for this - 1 cup of vinegar mixed into 1 gallon of water. I have not tried this, so I don't know how well it works, but it's worth a shot! Lol* I have tried a sponge with warm water and just soaking the paper a bit, then peeling it slowly off - though I used it for border rather than wallpaper.

You might want to look into renting a steamer - I don't know a lot about it, but my Mom used to buy old houses, fix them up, then sell them with her Dad, and she mentioned having to use a steamer to remove the old paper. Maybe call Lowe's or Home Depot and ask them if they have something like that you can rent, and I bet ya some one there will have some good suggestions for you.

Good luck! :)What is the best way to take down peeling old wallpaper so you can paint the area over?
If the wallpaper will not come down, you may need a ';scratcher'; which simply puts small holes in it.. and then wet it with water/wallpaper remover. it should come down then... with a scraper easily...

After the wallpaper is off be sure to wash the wall thoroughly with wallpaper paste remover. If you do not remove the wall paper paste the new paint will peal! What is the best way to take down peeling old wallpaper so you can paint the area over?
Lightly score your old wallpaper with a utility knife and then use some warm vinegar water in a spray water to saturate the paper. Wait about 15 minutes and then pull down the paper. You can also use a putty knife but becareful not to damage your walls. Good luck!
fill a spray bottle with hotwater. get a drywall mud scraper, spreader. just spray the wall saturate it pretty good. the paper will soon start to lift and kind of bubble up and just scrape it off. if you have to put alot of effort into it then your wall is not wet enough.
I would buy a wallpaper steamer to steam it off. You may then have to scrape of any excess. Clean your walls with a mild detergent. Once dry and clean make sure you use a good primer which help the new paint to adhere to the wall.
Pull off the top layer of the wallpaper with yout hands. Then wet a small section of the bottom layer/glue with a sponge that has been dipped in water. Use a paint scraper to scrape the rest of the paper off. You may have to scrub the wall down afterwards with household cleaner.
Peel off as much as you can by hand. Get some wall paper stripper like DIF. Mix according to the directions and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the remaining paper, let it soak in, and scrape with a plastic putty knife. Be gentle. You don't want to scrape into the paper layer of the drywall. Once all the wall paper is off, switch to a sponge, and a bucket of the stripper solution. Keep wiping and rinsing the sponge until the wall no longer feels sticky. Use extreme caution around the outlets and light switches. Turn off the circuit breakers if possible.
