We just painted our 20yr old house for the 1st time and after 5 months the paint is peeling off from ceilings?

from where the paint is peeling I can see the bare sheetrock, its like its peeling off where there is no texture in small pieces why is this? is this going to happen in walls too??????We just painted our 20yr old house for the 1st time and after 5 months the paint is peeling off from ceilings?
I'd guess you painted latex paint over oil-based paint. I can't imagine why anyone would have use oil-based paint but that is what can happen when you do it. Try using a heat gun to loosen the remaining paint and start from scratch. If you have a popcorn ceiling then the popcorn is simply coming loose which can happen when it gets wet and since latex paint is water-based it does qualify as wet. You can moisten the popcorn and scrape it off and then paint again, but you'll probably have to do some drywall work, popcorn is usually used to cover up a crappy drywall job.We just painted our 20yr old house for the 1st time and after 5 months the paint is peeling off from ceilings?
Did you paint over the existing paint? Or directly onto sheet rock? Is it sheet rock or plaster? Did you use primer? Did you clean the walls before painting? Do you know what type of paint was used originally? Were the walls and ceiling different colors? Or do you know if they were different paints?

This is very likely. But more info would help.
Your walls should be fine. Sounds like a popcorn ceiling or too much water in the paint. Ceiling paints are thicker.

You can prime those areas and get a spray texture to texture again. Be sure to cover everything with plastic.
